It seems like almost every day now that an automaker announces that it will increase the number of electrified models in its lineup. Volkswagen has already announced plans to introduce several new electric models, but now the larger Volkswagen Group of brands is following suit.
Volkswagen CEO Matthias Müller has announced that every one of Volkswagen Group’s 300 models will feature an electrified powertrain by 2030. The statement is a little broad, since an electrified powertrain can range anywhere from a 48-volt mild hybrid system, to a plug-in hybrid or full electric powertrain. Either way this includes several brands, like Audi, Bentley, Bugatti and Porsche, to name a few.
“This is not some vague declaration of intent. It is a strong self-commitment which, from today, becomes the yardstick by which we measure our performance,” stated Müller. “The transformation in our industry is unstoppable. And we will lead that transformation.”
VW expects that at least a quarter of its models will be electrified by 2025, which equates to more than 80 models. Of the 80 vehicles, 50 will be fully electric and almost 30 will have a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Of course all the new electric vehicles will put a strain on lithium-ion battery supplies, which VW predicts will be in short supply by 2025. VW has already started investing in charging infrastructure and setting aside $59.78 billion to build four battery factories.
