If you’ve ever had the chance to drive an electric car or plug-in hybrid you probably know how cumbersome the charging cables can be. In a few years wireless induction charging will hit the market and now it’s being reported that Volkswagen will begin offering it as an option in 2017.
VW is currently testing its new wireless charging system, which means that it won’t be available for the new e-Golf hatchback when it arrives in the U.S. later this year. Herbert Ruholl, the head of VW’s technical leader for its electrified cars says that the technology is about three years away, since the biggest hurdle will be standardization for the different electric cars on the market. VW also says that the technology will be relatively expensive when it arrives.

Toyota is also reportedly testing wireless charging technology for the next-generation Prius.
