Nissan hasn’t announced many details, but the new hybrid system, called e-Power, debuted last year in the Gripz concept crossover. The system, which is similar to the plug-in hybrid system that powers the Chevy Volt, will use a small engine to generate electricity that will charge an onboard battery. The battery will then be able to power the electric motor.

“This new electric vehicle will meet consumer demand for greater autonomy and fuel efficiency,” stated Carlos Ghosn, Nissan’s CEO. “It will utilize a new e-Power system that matches the agility, quietness, strong acceleration and efficiency of the Nissan Leaf.”
