BMW i5 will be based on the 5 Series?

It’s being reported that BMW is indeed working on a third model for its i sub-brand called the i5 and that it will be based on the 5 Series.

It’s being reported that BMW is indeed working on a third model for its i sub-brand called the i5 and that it will be based on the 5 Series. The i5 will be a plug-in hybrid that is based on the long wheelbase version of the 5 Series that is currently only available in China.
Of course BMW hasn’t confirmed anything, but the report claims that the i5 plug-in hybrid will arrive in 2018 and will be powered by a gasoline engine and two electric motors. Its electric only range is expected to be around 65 miles.

BMW expects to sell around 30,000 units a year with the biggest markets being the U.S. and China.
