In an attempt to combat falling sales, Nissan has announced plans to unveil the 2016 Leaf, which is getting a midcycle update that will give it a longer driving range. The improvements to the Leaf includes a new battery that will deliver 30 kwh of power compared to the current 24 kwh battery. The more powerful battery could give the Leaf a driving range around 105-110 miles.
Compared to the 84 miles that the current Leaf can drive, the updates would give the Leaf a longer driving range than many competitors, like the VW e-Golf, BMW i3 and Kia Soul EV. At 105 miles, the Leaf’s range will still be much lower than the Tesla Model S and the upcoming Chevy Bolt, but Nissan isn’t done.

Nissan recently revealed a Leaf equipped with a prototype next-generation electric powertrain that has a range of more than 310 miles. Nissan’s goal is to completely do away with the dreaded range anxiety that is currently hampering EV sales.
Nissan may reveal the updated 2016 Leaf as early as August of this year.
