Volvo is pushing ahead with its plans to switch to a fully electric lineup at the end of the decade, but in the meantime it’s improving its 2023 Recharge plug-in hybrids. The improved 90 and 60 Series models get an extended electric range, plus more power.

Volvo XC60 Recharge

The updated hybrid powertrain brings the all-electric range up to an EPA estimated 35-41 miles when driven in pure mode, depending on the model. The Volvo S60 Recharge has a 41 mile EV range, the XC60 and XC90 Recharge models have a 35 mile EV range. The previous S60 only had a 22 mile range, while the XC60 had 19 miles of range and the XC90 had a 18 mile EV range.

The longer driving range is the result of a new long-range battery pack that has an increased capacity from 11.6 kWh to 18.8 kWh. The increased battery capacity also improves performance in extreme cold or heat and it allows for pre-heating and pre-cooling, even when it’s unplugged. There’s also a new rear electric motor that now generates 143 horsepower, up from 87 hp to give the plug-in hybrid powertrain 455 hp and 523 pound-feet of torque. The previous setup only had 400 hp and 472 lb-ft.

Lastly the XC60 and S90 Recharge models now have one-pedal driving capability, which will probably eventually be added to the other Recharge models.
