It’s being reported that the Nissan Xterra’s days are numbered, since the report claims that the Xterra will be discontinued after the 2015 model year. According to a source the Xterra is getting the axe since it won’t comply with the new safety and emissions regulations that are scheduled to come into effect in 2016.
Normally Nissan would just update a model to make it comply with the new regulations, but sales of the Xterra body-on-frame SUV have declined so much over the last few years, that it doesn’t make financial sense to keep it around. As car-based crossovers continue to gain market share, truck-based SUVs are becoming more scarce. Toyota recently stopped selling the FJ Cruiser, one of the Xterra’s main rivals after the 2014 model year.
