Nissan hopes to improve the Leaf’s sales with a new cheaper version next year. The new entry-level Leaf will be part of the updates for the 2013 Leaf, which is set to also get a facelift. Nissan Leaf sales are down this year with only 5,212 Leafs sold in the U.S. through September, which is down from the 7,199 units sold in the same period last year.
Nissan’s original sales goal for the Leaf is 20,000 units, but the Leaf is being outsold by the Chevy Volt, which has a backup engine that kicks in when the battery power runs out. The current Leaf starts at $35,200 before the eligible $7,500 tax credit.
Nissan has yet to unveil the updates to the 2013 Leaf, but it will enter production in December and will arrive in dealerships before March.
