Nissan is reportedly going to preview the successor to the current 370Z at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show. The preview is likely to be a concept car, but it will preview the next Z, which will be “smaller and lighter” according to Nissan development chief Andy Palmer.
The concept version will likely feature an electric powertrain, but the production version will have a traditional gas powered engine, but an electric version could be a possibility. The next Z will also continue to offer a high-performance Nismo version as well.

Speaking about the Toyota GT86/ Scion FR-S, Palmer said that he doesn’t want to position the next Z as a competitor to Toyota’s rear-wheel-drive coupe. Instead he wants it to be a “next generation sports car.” His goal is for the next Z to be the poster model for the next generation of car fans.

“Kids in the UK are no longer taking their driving test,” he said, “and we have to energize those kids. The car has been demonized to them, so we have to find a new way to recall them.”
