In an effort to reduce the weight of its convertibles, Mercedes-Benz is reportedly going to delete the retractable hardtops from the next-generation SL and SLK models.
The next-generation SL and SLK will make a switch to a more conventional soft top, which is part of long list of changes. The next SL and SLK will also ride on Mercedes’ new MSA modular platform, which will not only reduce production costs, but will have better weight distribution with a lower center of gravity.

The next SLK is expected to offer a range of four and six-cylinder engines, while the the next SL will get Mercedes’ new 3.0L inline six-cylinder, which could generate up to 365 horsepower.

We’ll have to wait a bit to see the next-generation Mercedes-Benz roadsters, since the new SLK isn’t expected until 2020 and the new SL will arrive in 2021.
