Last week Mercedes-Benz unveiled the GLC Coupe, which is the automaker’s rival to the BMW X4 crossover coupe. Now it’s being reported that Mercedes-Benz may be considering a convertible version, which would go head-to-head with the new Range Rover Evoque convertible.
“It would be fun, and it’s actually not that much of an engineering challenge,” Michael Kelz, the chief engineer for the GLC, CLS, and E-Class model lines told Autocar.

If the GLC convertible does get the green light, it could join a segment that may soon consist of more that just the Evoque convertible. Mercedes-Benz actually thinks that the segment could grow as buyers move away from traditional convertibles. Right now the biggest obstacle keeping it from happening is that Mercedes doesn’t have the production capacity to build it. According to Kelz, the only way that Mercedes can build it in the near term is if it stops making on of its existing models.
