A new report claims that Mercedes-Benz is going to introduce a new compact A-Class sedan that will sit between the A-Class hatchback and CLA. An all-new A-Class hatchback is expected to debut in late 2017 or early 2018, which according to sources will arrive before the sedan version at the end of 2018.

According to Autocar, even though Mercedes-Benz already offers the four-door CLA, the A-Class sedan will be positioned higher in the lineup as a roomier alternative to the CLA. The A-Class sedan will be based on the automaker’s MFA platform, which means that front-wheel drive will be standard, although all-wheel drive will be an option.

The A-Class sedan will go head-to-head with the BMW 1 Series sedan, which is only sold in China and the Audi A3 sedan.
