Earlier this month Lincoln unveiled the Continental concept at the New York Auto Show, which may signal that Lincoln is getting ready to ditch the “MK” naming scheme that it launched almost a decade ago.
Let’s face it the “MK” names are a bit confusing, so it makes sense that Lincoln may revive iconic names like Continental and Town Car. Joe Hinrichs, Ford Motor Co.’s president of the Americas, recently hinted at the possibility. “Without divulging the future,” Hinrichs stated, “we’re very excited about the Continental name and the attention it’s gotten.”

Back in 2006 Lincoln said that it wanted to change the names of all its models so that buyers would focus on the brand as a whole rather than the individual models. 10 years later the move didn’t work, since the brand is still trying to regain market share..

The move to ditch the MK names could help Lincoln differentiate itself from the rest of the luxury segment that uses similar letter naming scheme. It’s already been confirmed that the Continental name will replace the MKS next year and luckily Lincoln never ditched the Navigator.
