Now that Alan Mulally is no longer Ford’s CEO details about some of his decisions have started to be released, with one of the biggest reports stating that he wanted to drop the Lincoln brand last year.
According to Bloomberg, Mulally suggested dropping the Lincoln brand last year, but Mark Fields, who is replacing Mulally actually convinced him to keep Lincoln alive. Mulally reportedly wasn’t happy with the “revived” Lincoln brand, since even after spending $1 billion to improve the brand, sales were still down 65 percent from a 1990 peak.

With the arrival of the 2015 MKC crossover and an all-new MKX on the way, only time will tell if Lincoln can survive. Last month it was reported that Lincoln is hoping to expand its lineup in the next few years and a possible Mustang variant is possible.

“Our team is so enthused about Mark becoming CEO,” Matt VanDyke, director of global Lincoln, stated. “Mark really understands and has instilled in all of us the strategic importance of the luxury business. It’s a small part of industry sales relatively, 8 percent and growing, but the contribution to the overall bottom line is a much higher percentage.”
