Lexus May Build an X3 and RDX Competitor

With the introduction of the new Infiniti EX35, Mercedes-Benz GLK and Acura RDX it seems like Lexus is the only luxury nameplate without a small crossover. This may change as Lexus may be working on a smaller than RX 350 crossover.

Although some executives previously have had no desire to build a small crossover, some are rethinking the idea. The small Lexus would be positioned at individuals that are” sick of the suburbs, but who don’t want to give up the utility of their SUV.”

The small SUV for urban buyers.

Jim Lentz, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. president, feels that a $30,000 compact SUV may not work because of the luxury features that would have to be left out to reach that target. The current RX 350 starts at $38,165, which is a little less than what the BMW X3 starts at. Although the Acura RDX and Infiniti EX 35 start even lower than the X3.

If Lexus does decide to build a small compact SUV it is likely that it would share most of its platform with the all-wheel-drive RAV4.
