Honda and Toyota finally embrace the turbo, Accord and Camry to get turbocharged

For years several automakers have been swapping out their large displacement engines for smaller turbocharged engines, but Japan’s Big 3 – Honda, Toyota and Nissan have largely stayed away turbos. Save for the fact that the first Acura RDX had a turbo and the Nissan Juke and GT-R models currently offer a turbo, you won’t find any other turbos on their lots. That’s about to change.

Honda has already confirmed plans to introduce turbocharged engines in its lineup, starting this fall with the all-new 2016 Civic, which will be offered with a 1.5L turbocharged engine. The same engine is also expected to be offered in the next CR-V and Accord. Also don’t forget about the 306-hp turbocharged Civic Type-R.

Over at Toyota, turbocharged engines have already started to show up with the arrival of the turbocharged Lexus NX crossover and the IS is also getting the same 2.0L four-cylinder this fall. The 2.0L turbocharged engine is expected to replace several V6 engines in the Toyota and Lexus lineup, including under the hood of the popular Camry.

Over at Nissan, turbocharged engines won’t happen as fast since Nissan uses its CVT transmissions as the basis of its efficient powertrains.
