The small pickup market isn’t what it used to be and today is largely only dominated by the Toyota Tacoma. Ford is actually ditching the market with the upcoming death of the Ranger in the US. But it looks like GM still sees demand in the segment since sources are now reporting that work has begun on the next -generation Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups.
The current Colorado and Canyon will end production in June 2012 at GM’s Shreveport plant, but that doesn’t mean that they are dead. PickupTrucks is reporting that work has already begun on the next-generation 2014 Colorado and Canyon that will be based on GM’s all new GMI 700 body-on-frame global small truck platform. The new platform is expected to be unveiled at he 2011 Thailand International Motor Expo in Bangkok. When the new Colorado and Canyon launch production is expected to shift to GM’s Wentzville plant that currently builds the full-size Chevy Express and GMC Savana vans.
