Following Ford’s segment changing 2015 F-150, which features aluminum body panels, GM is now reportedly also working on an aluminum-bodied pickup that will be introduced around 2018. In an effort to put its trucks on a serious diet, GM is going to follow Ford’s move by using lighter aluminum for the next-generation of the Silverado and Sierra pickups.
According to a recent report, GM has already locked down contracts with Alcoa Inc. and Novelis Inc. to supply aluminum for the next-generation pickups. The 2015 F-150 weighs up to 700 pounds less than the last model thanks to its body, which is mostly made of aluminum. GM is hoping to repeat the same results.
