Yesterday GM unveiled its all-new 2014 Silverado and Sierra pickups, but now we have some early details about their crosstown rival, the Ford F-Series. The next-generation 2015 Ford F-Series is slated to arrive in the fall of 2014. Ford has reportedly set a goal of improving the next pickup’s fuel economy by 15-20 percent, which would also make it the most fuel efficient model in the segment.
Ford is spending $2 billion on the redesigned F-Series, which has been the best selling vehicle in the U.S. for the past 30 years. A source told Automotive News, the next F-150 “will be a game-changer that will alter the dynamics of the truck segment. They’re shooting for best-in-class fuel economy.”
How will Ford meet the fuel economy goals? It’s being reported that Ford will use an extensive amount of aluminum in the next F-Series, which will shave off an average of 700 pounds. Ford is also working on a new line of fuel-efficient engines that are known internally as Nano. The Nano engines will use turbocharging and direct injection technologies, but the first one, a 2.9L V6 isn’t slated to arrive until 2016. Ford will also use eight-speed transmissions in the new F-Series.
