Ford has set the goal of launching its newest small cars with the highest quality ever in its attempt to challenge Toyota.
Bennie Fowler, Ford’s group vice president in charge of global quality, has stated that Ford is going to launch its new line of small cars from Europe with an average of 800 things gone wrong per 1,000 vehicles, which is better than Toyota and more than 500 fewer problems per 1,000 vehicles than the predicted industry average.
Fowler stated, “The vehicles we deliver in 2010 will be the highest quality ever.”
Part of Ford’s plan to achieve this goal is to send 5-10 hourly workers from its U.S. plants to Wayne State University this fall. The workers will receive full training to become certified Six Sigma black belts, the industry standard for quality expertise.
