Chrysler has just announced that the automaker will shutdown most of its operations in July for 2 weeks.
CEO Bob Nardelli said in a memo that the automaker will take a “two-week mandatory shutdown for the weeks of July 7 and July 14.” He went on to say that “As a private company, we need to think like owners and do our part to accelerate Chrysler’s recovery and transformation.”
Chrysler lost $1.6 billion in 2007 and sales in the first two months of this year are down 13 percent.
In addition to shutting down for two weeks, Chrysler is also offering buyouts to 44,000 hourly workers in order to trim costs.
It is normal for automakers to idle plants during the summer as they retool their plants for the upcoming model year changes.
