Chrysler is Going to Invest $1.8 Billion in Detroit Plant to Build New Car Based Jeep

Chrysler has announced plans to invest $1.8 billion retooling and expanding its Jefferson North Assembly Plant in order to produce a new car-based Jeep.

According to vice chairman and president, Tom LaSorda the money is going to be used for new vehicle programs and a 285,000-square-foot expansion of the plant. Eventually it is expected that the plant will produce 120,000 vehicles annually including a new Jeep Grand Cherokee in the spring of 2010.

It is expected that the new car based Jeep will actually be the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee which will get Chrysler’s new more efficient Phoenix engine.
