Earlier this week BMW took the wraps off the M5 Concept, which is pretty much the same thing that will eventually show up in showrooms. The all-new M5 ditches its current V10 engine for the same turbocharged 4.4L V8 that is wedged under the hoods of the X5 M and X6 M.
BMW’s head of R&D, Albert Biermann recently spoke to Autocar about the new M5 and the overall M division. He confirmed that the 4.4L V8 will also make its way under the hood of the M6 coupe and convertible and even the four-door GranCoupe, which is BMW’s answer to the Mercedes-Benz CLS. He also confirmed that an all-wheel-drive M5 is in the works.
“There will be some all-wheel-drive surprises on M cars in the future,” says Biermann.
The decision to offer an all-wheel-drive M5 is to satisfy demand in areas where the all-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz AMG and Audi RS models are selling well.
