According to Alfa Romeo, the name for the SUV comes from a small town located in the Alps of northern Italy. The town is close to the border of Switzerland and is famous for the Stelvio Pass – a popular winding road that is one of the best driving roads in the world because of its fast switchbacks and elevation changes.

The Stelvio is based on the rear-wheel drive Giorgio platform that is also the basis for the Giulia sedan. The model debuting this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show is the Quadriofoglio model, which is powered by the same twin-turbocharged 2.9L V-6 as the Giulia Quadrifoglio, with 505 horsepower and 443 lb-ft. of torque. The V6 is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and sends its power to the ground via standard all-wheel drive system. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio can reach 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 177 mph.
