After selling 1.4 million units in four years, Mazda is ready to introduce an all-new CX-5, which is debuting this week at the LA Auto Show. The second-generation CX-5 borrows many of the styling cues from the newer CX-9 and CX-3 models, but according to Mazda its designers settled on a “refined toughness” design theme for the new CX-5.

With its lower center of gravity, wider track and pushed back A-pillars, the new CX-5 looks longer and lower than the first generation. Inside the interior features a “human-centered” design. What does that mean? Well for one, the driver’s seat is designed to provide an ideal driving position, with all controls and switches laid out where the driver can naturally extend a hand or foot to operate them. Rearward positioning of the A-pillars expands the driver’s field of vision to the right and left, while smaller new door mirrors enhance diagonal visibility toward the corners.

The CX-5 will be offered with three engine options around the world: a 2.2 clean diesel engine, along with the 2.0 and 2.5 direct-injection gasoline engines. Don’t bet on the diesel being offered in the US anytime soon.
