Just as the new 7 Series wasn’t a dramatic departure from the generation before it, the new 5 Series is more of an evolutionary redesign. It’s exterior design takes many of the styling cues from the larger 7 Series and at the same time doesn’t stray too far from the design of the previous generation. BMW does point out that the front and rear overhangs have been shortened, while the 5 Series adopts a face that is so close to the new 7 Series, that you may not even tell the difference at first glance. The new 5 Series is also around 137 pounds lighter than the last model.

Inside the new 5 Series gets a host of new tech features, like the same gesture control system as the 7 Series and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with an iDrive 6.0 touchpad controller.

When the new 5 Series arrives early next year, it will be offered with several powertrain options. The base 530i will be powered by a four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the more powerful 540i will be powered by a turbocharged six-cylinder engine with 335 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. BMW says that the 540i will reach 0-60 mpg in 4.7 seconds. Both models will be available with all-wheel drive and an M Sport Package is also part of the option list.
