California could soon join other countries that have introduced new legislation that will ban fossil-fuel powered vehicles. California Assemblymember Phil Ting plans to introduce a new bill that will make it so that only zero emissions vehicles can be registered in the state starting in 2040.

“Until you set a deadline, nothing gets done,” Ting, who represents much of San Francisco, stated. “It’s responsible for us to set a deadline 23 years in advance.”

Ting plans to introduce the bill next month in Sacramento. If the bill is adopted it would help California reach its goals of slashing emissions by 80 percent from 1990 levels by 2050.

This isn’t the first time that an official from California has discussed banning internal combustion engines, since Governor Jerry Brown also showed interest in the idea of following other countries, like China.
