The Mazda CX-5 is one of the sportier offerings in the crowded compact crossover segment, but mainly because of its driving dynamics and not what’s under the hood. What the Mazda CX-5 could really use is a more powerful engine and according to leaked documents, that might be in the works for 2019.

2019 Mazda CX-5

According to leaked documents from the California Air Resources Board (CARB), the 2019 Mazda CX-5 could be getting the same 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder as the larger CX-9. This is also the same turbocharged engine that is now optional in the Mazda6.

In the CX-9 the 2.5L four-cylinder generates 227 horsepower if you put in regular 87 octane fuel, if you pump in premium 93 octane fuel, the horsepower rating jumps to 250 horsepower. With either fuel type, the 2.5L engine generates 310 lb-ft. of torque. This is a nice bump over the non-turbo 2.5L engine in the CX-5 that generates 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft.

With the 2019 MX-5 Miata also getting a nice horsepower boost, it looks like the “zoom zoom” brand is finally adding a bit more “zoom zoom” under the hood. Stay tuned.
