Hyundai has announced that it is partnering with quantum computer maker IonQ Inc, which will help it use quantum computers to develop better batteries. The partnership will see the two companies create a battery chemistry model that will help improve the costs, performance and safety of lithium-ion batteries.

According to Hyundai, the two companies are “creating the most advanced battery chemistry model yet developed on quantum computers, measured by the number of qubits and quantum gates.”

“This creative collaboration with IonQ is expected to provide innovation in the development of basic materials in virtual space for various parts of the future mobility,” said TaeWon Lim, Executive Vice President and Head of Materials Research & Engineering Center at Hyundai Motor Group. “We’re excited to step into the upcoming quantum era and take advantage of the opportunities that await with more effective battery power.”
