Ford is currently working on a Ford Escape plug-in hybrid. The Escape plug-in hybrid, which may not arrive until the 2020 model year, will likely replace the slow selling C-Max Energi in Ford’s electrified lineup.

Expect the Ford Escape Energi to go on sale in late 2018 or early 2019.

Ford hasn’t made any announcements about the Escape plug-in hybrid, including its specifications, but prototypes of a plug-in hybrid Escape prototype have been photographed recently. Inside EVs predicts that Ford could unveil the new Escape Energi in 2018. The Escape plug-in hybrid would also join new plug-in hybrid versions of the Explorer, Focus and even the Ford Transit.

This isn’t the first time that Ford has build a plug-in version of the Escape, since 10 years ago, Ford built a small fleet of Escape plug-in hybrids to Southern California Edison for testing.

The Escape plug-in hybrid will also give Ford a rival to a growing number of compact hybrid crossovers, like the Toyota RAV-4 and Nissan Rogue. Honda is also expected to introduce a hybrid version of the popular CR-V.
