The 2018 BMW i3s brought several upgrades to the i3 lineup, including its more powerful 184-hp engine and sportier suspension, but there was also another new feature that was less talked about. The i3s also debuted BMW’s new innovative traction control system that’s 50 times faster than older systems.

BMW has now announced that the new traction control system will be offered on the rest of the BMW and MINI models, including non-electric models. “It will therefore be fitted in BMW and MINI models with front-, rear- and all-wheel drive to deliver noticeably greater assurance and driving pleasure when road conditions make pulling away difficult.”

“With their high levels of torque and instantaneous responses to every movement of the accelerator, electric motors already make significantly higher demands on driving stability systems than conventional power units,” explains Peter Langen, Head of Chassis Development at BMW.

The new innovative traction control system calculates changes directly within the powertrain, unlike other driving stability systems that use a remote unit that requires long signal paths. According to BMW, the system improves traction and driving stability in adverse weather and road conditions when pulling away.
