Official Sketches of the 2010 Audi A1 Leaked… It's Audi's Answer to the MINI

Apparently CAR Online has received official sketches of Audi’s new A1. With the success of the MINI line, Audi is working on a new small car to compete with the MINI and the BMW 1-Series. Unlike the photo renderings that we usually see of upcoming cars that only speculate on what the final product will look like, these photos are the real thing!

The new A1 will be based on the automaker’s Modular Tranverse Matrix (MQB) platform, which will be cheap to produce. This will allow Audi to price it 10% below the MINI. Front wheel drive will be standard on the A1, but Quattro all-wheel-drive will be optional. In addition the A1 is going to receive a new 7-speed DSG transmission that is cheaper to produce than the current DSG transmissions.

The A1 platform will also underpin the new A3 in 2010.

Four different A1 versions are planned: a three-door hatchback, five-door hatchback, two-door coupe, and a convertible model. There will also be an S1 variant that will be powered by a 200 horsepower turbo engine with Quattro all-wheel-drive.

Audi hopes to build 100,000 of the cars in 2010.
