When Toyota unveiled the FT-4X concept a few months ago, Toyota hinted that the crossover concept could enter production as an alternative to the compact C-HR crossover. Now it looks like Toyota may be working on a production version of the FT-4X concept, since Toyota recently registered a new name – Toyota TJ Cruiser.

The TJ Cruiser will probably share its platform with the C-HR crossover

Yup the name is close to the recently departed, off-road loving FJ Cruiser. It makes sense that Toyota ditch the FT-4X name, since the “FT” portion of its name is usually reserved for Toyota’s concepts (Future Toyota). But if you’re getting excited at the idea of Toyota releasing another off-road ready SUV, you’ll probably be disappointed with the TJ Cruiser, if that’s what it ends up being called.

The FT-4X is based on Toyota’s TNGA C-Platform, which is also used for the C-HR. So even though the concept’s styling may look like it’s inspired by the FJ Cruiser, the concept’s smaller size and softer platform will make it more geared for an urban environment.

Of course Toyota hasn’t officially announced any production plans or any details about the TJ Cruiser, so for now we’ll have to wait and see.
