Toyota Announces New, More Efficient Engine Lineup

Toyota has announced that it will soon release a new generation of gasoline engines that will be at least 10 percent more fuel efficient than today's engines. The new engines leverage combustion and loss-reduction technologies from Toyota's hybrid engines.

VW Confirms a New TDI Diesel Engine for the 2015 Golf, Jetta, Passat and Beetle

Volkswagen has announced that when the 2015 Golf, Beetle, Beetle Convertible, Passat, and Jetta start arriving in showrooms in the second half of 2014, they will be offered with a new TDI diesel engine. The new diesel engine is more powerful and more efficient than the current 2.0L TDI engine that is offered in several VW and Audi models.

Tesla's $5 Billion Gigafactory Will Hire 6,500 Workers in the U.S.

Tesla has revealed more details about its new battery plant, dubbed the Gigafactory, which will be "world's largest battery factory" when it powers up by 2017. Tesla estimates that the Gigafactory will cost about $5 billion and will employ up to 6,500 employees at a site that could be up to 1,000 acres.

Honda Confirms Plans to Discontinue to the Insight Hybrid

After several rumors and reports that the Honda Insight is being discontinued in Europe, Honda has now confirmed that the Insight hybrid will be leaving the U.S. market as well. The Insight has never been able to put even a small dent in Toyota Prius sales and slow sales means that it will be gone after the 2014 model year.

BMW has announced that the X5 plug-in hybrid, which will likely be called X5 eDrive, will be powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder mated to an electric motor and BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

Honda Stops Selling the Insight and CR-Z Hybrids in Europe

Slow sales of the Honda Insight and CR-Z hybrids have prompted Honda to stop selling them in Europe. Last year Honda only sold 1,242 Insights and 695 CR-Zs in Europe, which were both down over 60 percent from the prior year. Honda will now just sell off its remaining stock of Insights and CR-Zs.

Chevy has announced the availability of new bi-fuel versions of the 2015 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD pickups. Currently CNG is priced at about 62 percent lower than gasoline, so it represents big savings. For example a work truck driven 26,000 miles a year can save more than $2,000 annually based on 75-percent CNG usage and comparable efficiency to gasoline.
