It's being reported that Audi is working on a new e-quattro all-wheel-drive system that mates a gas engine to two electric motors - with one electric motor in the transmission and the second powering the rear wheels. BMW and VW are set to emulate Tesla by creating an electric vehicle charging network across both the East and West coast of the U.S. The two automakers have partnered with ChargePoint to add 100 DC fast chargers to ChargePoint's network of more than 20,000 charging spots in North America.

Tokyo has set a goal of putting 6,000 vehicles on the road by the 2020 Olympics, which will see the city spend up to $385 million on fuel cell vehicle subsidies and hydrogen stations. Tokyo plans to build 35 stations and is in negotiations with Toyota and Honda, since both automakers plan to release new fuel-cell vehicles within the next year.

Now that Chevy has officially upped the ante with the debut of the 200-mile range Chevy Bolt electric vehicle, it's time for other EVs to follow suit. Could GM be working on a crossover version of the Volt? Back in 2011 General Motors filed a trademark application for the "Crossvolt" name, but then in November of this year that trademark expired. Now its being reported that GM applied to use the same trademark in August of this year, which leads to some speculation that GM may actually use the name.

Toyota has announced that its new fuel cell vehicle will be put through its paces in the final installment in this year's Japanese Rally Championship, the 177 mile Shinshiro Rally held in Aichi Prefecture on November 1 and 2. The Toyota FCV that has been specially tuned and outfitted for rally racing will check the safety of the roads as a zero car.

I wake up from a nap to find myself sweating in a car with the A/C off in the middle of the California desert. No this isn't a nightmare, my driving partner and I are trying to reach it to San Diego, which is over 100 miles away, but our 2015 Audi A3 TDI's gas gauge says were almost on empty. Why couldn't we stop for fuel? Last week Audi invited 18 journalists out to Albuquerque, New Mexico to take part in its newest TDI Challenge. This isn't the first time that Audi has set up a mileage challenge, since a similar drive was done with the A6 and Q7 TDI diesel models, but this time the only model in the challenge would be the all-new A3 TDI.
