Audi is working on an all-electric SUV that is expected to arrive by 2018. Although earlier rumors suggested that it would be called the Q6, Audi CEO Rupert Stadler has confirmed that it will simply be called the “e-tron.”
“It is comparable to the first Audi quattro, which was known simply as the quattro,” Stadler revealed to Autocar. “In the long term the name e-tron will stand for a pure electric driveline structure.”

The e-tron name was originally introduced in 2009 with the debut an electric concept car that was based on the R8. Since then the e-tron name has been applied to the A3 and Q7 plug-in hybrids. Audi will continue to expand the number of e-tron models with two new electric cars expected to arrive by 2020.
