Earlier this year Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed that Tesla’s next model, the Model Y crossover would be built on a new platform – instead of sharing parts with the Model 3. Luckily things change fast and now Musk has confirmed that both models will be built on the same platform.
Why the change of heart? “Upon the council of my executive team to reel me back from the cliffs of insanity, the Model Y will, in fact, be using substantial carry over from Model 3 in order to bring it to market faster,” Elon Musk stated on an earnings call.
The Model Y is expected to arrive in 2019 or early 2020. Although it will be built on the same platform as the Model 3, it will be evolved a bit. For example expect an updated wiring harness, since originally Musk wanted the Model Y to ditch the current 12-volt battery architecture to simplify the build process and reduce the amount of wiring.
