Ram rules out midsize pickup, deemed too costly

The midsize pickup segment has been brought back from near extinction thanks to the introduction of the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups. Toyota has also revamped the Tacoma for the 2016 model year, but even though the segment may be getting hot again, Chrysler won’t be rejoining it.

Ram boss Bob Hegbloom has revealed that Ram will not be introducing a midsize pickup. The last time the Chrysler brand offered a midsize pickup was the Dodge Dakota, which was discontinued in 2011.

Hegbloom says that Ram won’t introduce a midsize pickup, since the numbers don’t work. He says that in the 1980s, midsize pickups sold well since customers bought them because they were smaller, less expensive and more fuel efficient than the larger full-size pickups. Today it’s harder to deliver on those same principles.

“If full-size now is pushing 30 [mpg], you’re going to expect a midsize to be at least at 35,” Hegbloom stated. “You’re also going to expect it to be significantly less expensive. But to bring the technology in to deliver on 35 mpg, then you’re going to raise the price.”
