Next-Gen Chevy Malibu to Get Dramatic Redesign

Normally automakers don’t like to release details about future models, but in the case of the Malibu, GM’s execs are already talking about what we can expect from the revamped 2016 Malibu.

The Chevrolet Malibu is one of the lame ducks in Chevrolet’s lineup that includes stars, like the new Colorado and Corvette. Normally automakers don’t like to release details about future models, but in the case of the Malibu, GM’s execs are already talking about what we can expect from the revamped 2016 Malibu.
The current Malibu launched in the spring of 2012, but since its arrival sales of the Malibu have continued to decline. Even a quick refresh a year later hasn’t helped sales and this year sales are down seven percent. It’s also the only vehicle in the segment’s top eight sellers that is experiencing a sales decline this year.

GM is trying to help the Malibu move off dealer lots with a hefty $3,500 rebate or a $189 per month, $1,369 down lease. That may help, but in the background GM is moving fast to release a new Malibu, that Mark Reuss, GM’s product development chief says will have a “groundbreaking design but also groundbreaking technology.”

“When is the last time you saw a [midsize] car this distinctive and this dramatic from General Motors?” Reuss stated at an investor presentation in October.

GM global design chief Ed Welburn also stated this month that the next Malibu’s design will “make a significant statement” with “a very passionate design.”

The next Malibu, which is about a year away will also reportedly take some design cues from Chevy’s sportier models, like the Corvette.
