Overall the changes to the 986-hp P1 GTR are small compared to the design concept that debuted at last year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The track-only P1 GTR’s front track is 80mm wider than the road-going McLaren P1 and with its aggressively profiled front splitter, the also car sits 50mm lower to the ground on center-locking 19-inch motorsport alloy wheels shod with Pirelli slick tires. The rear of the P1 GTR is dominated by a fixed-height wing that sits 100mm higher than the regular P1. The P1 GTR’s side windows are also made of racing spec polycarbonate to cut weight.

McLaren also made modifications to the 3.8L twin-turbocharged V8, which is mated to an electric motor for a total 986-hp. The V8 produces 789 horsepower, while the electric motor adds another 197 horsepower to the mix. The powertrain has been thoroughly revised for optimum performance on track, with key components replaced with motorsport-developed parts, more suited to the sustained high speed running the cars will be subjected to. In addition to this, features within the powertrain of the McLaren P1 designed specifically for public highway use have been removed to reduce weight.
