BMW has announced an ambitious plan to compete with Mercedes-Benz, which will include releasing 40 new or updated models over the next two years. Part of the new introductions will be the small X2 crossover and finally a model larger than the X5, dubbed the X7.
Last year was the first time that BMW’s sales slipped behind Mercedes-Benz in over a decade, so it’s no surprise that BMW is being aggressive. Last year BMW delivered 2 million cars globally, which was up 5.2 percent from the prior year, but Mercedes-Benz managed to improve its sales by 11 percent, with sales totaling 2.08 million vehicles.

We are launching the biggest model offensive ever,” CEO Harald Krueger said at BMW’s annual press conference. “We have started a transformation unlike anything our company has seen before.”

Although BMW is hoping the new models will help it regain its sales crown, the automaker is mainly focused on profitability. BMW wants to become “the strongest brand in this segment and significantly increase our sales volumes and revenues here by 2020,” Krueger stated.
