Apple recently confirmed that it is not working on a new car and is instead testing new self-driving technology. Now it’s being reported that Apple is currently leasing a small fleet of Lexus RX 450h SUVs from Hertz test its autonomous driving technology.

Bloomberg is reporting that Apple has been testing at least a half-dozen vehicles with its new autonomous technology on public roads in and around San Francisco for at least a year. Apple and Hertz have not commented on the new report, but Apple’s decision to rent cars from Hertz mirrors a similar agreement between Alphabet Inc. and Avis.

Apple hasn’t announced when its technology will be released, but Apple CEO, Tim Cook recntly stated, “We’re focusing on autonomous systems. It’s a core technology that we view as very important.” He continued by stating that the project is “the mother of all AI projects,” and that it’s “probably one of the most difficult AI projects to work on.”
