Mercedes-Benz hasn’t even unveiled the next-generation A-Class models, but we may have some hints at what to expect from the next AMG versions. AMG boss Tobias Moers revealed at the New York Auto Show earlier this month that the next Mercedes-AMG A45 will pack some serious power.

When questioned at the show, Moers revealed that we still have to wait a bit until the next-generation, “It’s still a little while away, the next generation is not as – let me say this, you know how regular life cycles work.”

This means that we probably have to wait until at least the 2019 model year until the next-generation, but it might be worth the wait. The Mercedes-AMG boss also revealed that the next-generation A-Class hatchback and hopefully the CLA will have at least 400 horsepower. “We don’t want to give a tip or an advantage to our competitors, but we do need to be over 300 kW – that’s the new standard,” Moers revealed to Car Advice.

We don’t know all the details about what will power the AMG A45, but we do know that it will be a new 2.0L turbocharged engine, that may even get an electric turbine at some point. “The new 2.0-liter will be an all-new engine,” Moers said. “Yes an electric turbine is something we have a close link to, but maybe not in that first version.”

Mercedes-Benz recently also provided a glimpse at what the next-generation A-Class models will look like with the debut of the Concept A at the Shanghai Motor Show. In addition to giving a preview to some of the design details, the concept also previewed a new A-Class sedan that is going to join the lineup. Hopefully the A-Class sedan will also get an AMG version.
