Earlier this week Uber launched its self-driving pilot in San Francisco with a fleet of self-driving Volvo XC90 SUVs. Within hours there were reports that the self-driving vehicles were running red lights, even though they were manned by an engineer. Once the California Department of Motor Vehicles got word about the pilot program, it quickly shut it down, so now Uber is moving the pilot to Arizona.

Volvo has released a teaser of the new V90 Cross Country, the successor to the XC90 Cross Country, which is going to debut later this month at the Paris Motor Show. The V90 Cross Country will look nearly identical to the V90, but will feature extra body cladding, a higher ride height and underbody protection to make it a bit more capable once the paved road ends.

Volvo and Uber have announced a new partnership that will develop new base vehicles that will be able to incorporate the latest developments in AD technologies and fully autonomous driverless vehicles. As part of the partnership the base vehicles will be built by and then purchased from Volvo by Uber. Volvo and Uber are contributing a combined $300 million to the project.

Three-cylinder engines are gaining in popularity thanks to Ford and MINI and now Volvo has revealed its new three-cylinder engine. The new three-cylinder engine is part of Volvo's new Drive-E engine family and generates around 180 horsepower.
"We have come a long way in the last few years at Volvo. Investments from our parent company, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, have enabled us to recapture our position as a leader in the field of powertrain engineering. The development program for the new 3-cylinder engine is very advanced and we have already begun prototype testing of the unit," says Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.

Volvo has revealed its new Drive-E powertrain concept, which is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates an awesome 450 horsepower. The engine is a follow up to the Drive-E engines that Volvo launched in 2013 and showcases how Volvo intends to downsize its engines, without sacrificing performance.
The Drive-E Powertrain Concept utilizes two parallel turbochargers, which are fed by an electrically powered turbo-compressor. The compressed air from this unit, rather than being fed to the cylinders, is instead used to spool up the two parallel turbochargers. Fuel is fed by a dual fuel pump working at 250 bar pressure. Volvo says that With this kind of power density, the triple boost installation and unique fuel system, there shouldn't be any turbo lag.
