Today Volvo's lineup as grown quite stale with the only updates being mild updates to its existing lineup, but some big things are on the horizon for the Swedish brand. Volvo has announced the pricing for the 2016 XC90 T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid that is going to arrive this summer. Pricing is starts at $69,095 with destination fees included for the "Momentum" model, while the "Inscription" model starts at $72,595 and the "R-Design" $70,995.

Three-cylinder engines are gaining in popularity thanks to Ford and MINI and now Volvo has revealed its new three-cylinder engine. The new three-cylinder engine is part of Volvo's new Drive-E engine family and generates around 180 horsepower.
"We have come a long way in the last few years at Volvo. Investments from our parent company, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, have enabled us to recapture our position as a leader in the field of powertrain engineering. The development program for the new 3-cylinder engine is very advanced and we have already begun prototype testing of the unit," says Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.

Volvo has revealed its new Drive-E powertrain concept, which is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates an awesome 450 horsepower. The engine is a follow up to the Drive-E engines that Volvo launched in 2013 and showcases how Volvo intends to downsize its engines, without sacrificing performance.
The Drive-E Powertrain Concept utilizes two parallel turbochargers, which are fed by an electrically powered turbo-compressor. The compressed air from this unit, rather than being fed to the cylinders, is instead used to spool up the two parallel turbochargers. Fuel is fed by a dual fuel pump working at 250 bar pressure. Volvo says that With this kind of power density, the triple boost installation and unique fuel system, there shouldn't be any turbo lag.

Last week Volvo took the wraps off the all-new 2015 Volvo XC90 SUV and also announced the released of a limited "First Edition" version of the new XC90 that would go on sale this week. Volvo announced that only 1,927 units would be produced, which went on sale on Wednesday. Volvo says that all of the "First Edition" XC90 SUVs were sold out in 47 hours.

Volvo has the announced the kick off the new "Drive Me - Self-driving cars for sustainable mobility" project in Sweden, which will see the deployment of 100 self-driving autonomous vehicles on the public roads in the Swedish city of Gothenburg. The project, which kicks off in 2014 is a joint collaboration between Volvo, the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Transport Agency, Lindholmen Science Park and the City of Gothenburg.
