For years Audi has pushed its Quattro all-wheel drive system, but that could soon change. Stephan Winkelmann, Audi Sport’s CEO, recently hinted at the idea of rear-wheel drive Audi Sport cars at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

“I can imagine we can also have cars with rear-wheel drive or two-wheel drive in the future,” Winkelmann told U.K.’s Auto Express. He went on to state, “Quattro can be a company, but it can also be an option.”

The reveal also explains why the brand has been renamed from Quattro to Audi Sport. “When looking at the name, we decided Quattro could be misleading. Quattro is the four-wheel drive system and is one of the things that made Audi great — but in our opinion was not the right name for the company.”

A rear-wheel drive Audi R8 is already in the works and two new models will make their debut in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

In the future we can also expect high-performance RS-branded SUVs and electrified models are also in the works.
