VW is bringing a new I.D. concept to Detroit - Hello Microbus?

After unveiling the electric I.D. concept a few months ago at the Paris Motor Show, VW has announced plans to unveil another I.D. concept next month at the Detroit Auto Show.

The new concept is also based on the same MEB platform as the original concept, but from the teaser photos it's clear that this newest concept may be a new Microbus concept. We've already seen the microbus inspired Budd-e concept, but the newest concept may also be an electric van.

VW is careful to not give away all the details, but does state that the newest I.D. concept "forges links between the legendary origins of the Volkswagen brand and its electrifying future." A strong hint at a new microbus.

This I.D. concept vehicle will also be able to drive fully autonomously in the future. After pressing lightly on the VW logo, the electrically retractable steering wheel disappears into the dashboard. While the driver relaxes, laser scanners, ultrasonic and radar sensors and cameras monitor other road users and the surroundings.
