Nissan confirms plans to build EV with range extender

Even though the 2016 Nissan Leaf can now travel further than every EV in its price range, a 107 mile driving range is still not long enough to banish range anxiety fears for many drivers. That is why Nissan is now working on a new EV with a range extender, like the Chevy Volt and BMW i3.

The unnamed EV will not be based on the Leaf, but instead will be an entirely new electric vehicle that will be powered by an electric motor and small gasoline engine. Just like in the BMW i3, the small gas engine will only be used to charge the battery pack when it runs low. The engine will never actually power the wheels.

Nissan hasn't released any other big details about the new EV, but it will debut sometime next year.
