2012 Porsche Boxster Could be Powered by a Three-Cylinder Engine

Porsche is currently working on the replacement for the Boxster, which is expected to be released late next year as a 2012 model and according to the latest reports Porsche could be working on a special fuel-efficient model.

There have been rumors that Porsche has been thinking about a lightweight, turbocharged four-cylinder for the 2012 Boxster, but model line director, Hans-Jurgen Wohler, recently revealed to Autocar that a three-cylinder is also possible. Using a smaller, more fuel-efficient engine in the next Boxster would help Porsche lower its fleet emissions due to the new higher standards in the US and Europe.

"A Boxster with a four-cylinder engine, or maybe even a three-cylinder turbo, could produce between 180 and 200 horsepower," said Wohler. "Given the Boxster's history--that it started with a 200 horsepower, 2.5-litre engine--I think this is possibly something that customers could accept.

Since Volkswagen now owns Porsche, its time for Porsche to stop making cars for the masses. Let Volkswagen handle the MPG and mass market cars, Porsche performance. You don't see Bentley, Bugatti, and Lambo making fuel efficient cars for the masses. This, coupled with the fact that Porsche only sold 34,266 in the first half of 2008/2009 fiscal year means they shouldn't really put a dent in Volkswagen's fleet numbers, no matter how bad they are.

I more or less agree with Avatar and I certainly think a 3 cylinder would tank in the market place. Maybe Porsche should consider dumping the SUV in their lineup which would help their emissions and MPGs a whole lot better than than trying to make their most affordable sports car into an economy car. All that said, if they insisted on excluding the 6 cylinder in the new Boxster, I suppose a very well done turbo 4 would be acceptable as long as the car was light enough and the horsepower high enough to match the power to weight ratio on the current Boxster.

If they do decide to put an economical 3 banger in there at least all the current generation Boxster owners will get a windfall. I would think the more powerful older generation Boxsters would become very desirable and the average used prices would increase a good amount, supply and demand and all that.

It would be similar to when Ford downsized the Mustang in 1974 and started using a 4 cylinder after nothing but V6s and mostly V8s in the previous generation Mustangs. Suddenly, the older Mustangs were in high demand.......

Hey Porsche,
If you want to lower the fleets' emissions , get rid of the awful SUV and return to the sports car maker you are. I actually have no problem with a turbo 4 cylinder in the Boxster/Cayman. A 3 cylinder will not have the right noises to qualify as a Porsche engine.

I can't see anybody getting over their mid-life crisis by slipping into the seat of a 3-cylinder Porsche. Especially when they are getting laughed at by the 4-cylinder Civic and Corolla drivers.

200hp? I mean really. You talking about a Boxster competing against a GTI at that point. Hell a non turbo Clio could probably do well against it. Or possibly a Honda...

But frankly I never did like the Boxster. They are right, yeah the original model only had 2.5l 200hp engine, and for that it was a poor mans Porsche. The newer models are much better, and I think make a acceptable addition to the Porsche name. It only took them what a decade to get here...

I doubt I'd ever own a Porsche. Unless I won the lottery or somehow acquired a boat load of money, I couldn't spend enough on one to make it worth it. But if I did have the money, yeah I'd take a GT2.

(And really should something like the 911 Turbo/GT3/GT2 even be part of the emissions/mpg standards?)
