BMW and Audi are both ditching their large displacement engines for small more efficient engines with turbos, well it looks like Mercedes-Benz is also about to follow the trend. The latest reports are claiming that Mercedes-Benz is going to replace the 6.2L V8 it currently offers in its AMG models with a turbo-charged 5.5L.
Daimler AG Group Research & Mercedes-Benz Cars Development board member Dr. Thomas Weber recently revealed to Inside Line that the 5.5L V8 will replace the 6.2L by the end of next year. Weber didn't provide any specifications of the new engine. He also stated that other all 2011 V8 powered Mercedes-Benz models will use smaller turbocharged V8s.

Does McLaren still do the SLR version?
If so I wonder what they think about this...

The SLR has been discontinued. It is replaced with the SLS. The SLS is inferior to the SLR however performance wise, so makes one question as to why they went backwards. Lack of McLaren probably had a lot to do with it.

Why should Benz worry about what the McLaren team thinks? Cars were invented to be useful to the majority of people.
I think it's a positive move to reduce the capacity and start playing around with other technologies to progress into the future. What works now might not work later down the track ... they have to experiment now and prepare for when the trend changes.
