The guys over at Temple of VTEC have received some photos of a JDM-spec 2011 Honda CR-Z brochure. The photos give us our first look of the Honda CR-Z hybrid, which is expected to go on sale in the US in the second quarter of 2010.
The 2011 Honda CR-Z in JDM-spec will be powered by a 1.5L with 112 horsepower that is mated to a 14 hp electric motor for a total of 128 horsepower. The engine also puts out 107 lb-ft of torque with the electric motor contributing another 57 lb-ft. The engine is mated to either a six-speed manual or CVT transmission. The small hybrid is expected to reach 0-62 mph in 9.7 seconds.
The exterior dimensions have not changed much from the concept version at 160.6 inches long, 68.5 inches wide, 54.9 inches tall.

Knowing the Honda tuner crowd we will end up with K20A swaps making north of 240 hp....
If they'll do it to an Elise, then they will certainly do it here.

I love my honda like I love my ganja! Hahahahaha! This is sad, i dont see anything sporty about those numbers. Obviously its sporty cause its a Honda though, can't wait for the Type-R verizion with 150hp.

Let's hope that locomotive-slant front is just the effect of photographing the magazine at that angle (not head-on) - although wouldn't it be easier to jut find the pics on a related site?
To me it doesn't look Mazda-esque, but kinda Audi-esque, below the bumper (large "corner intakes" and "Nuvolari grille".
With those looks (and, well, I guess those performance figures too), it *does* resemble a CRX!
Anyway, kudos to Honda for doing a car not as bland or ugly as their latest offerings (Crosstour, anyone?).

Notice they skipped the "Y" in the model name progression after the CR-X. Nobody wanted to buy a Honda CR-Y...
Not a fan of the Honda Family Truckster front-end... bears too much resemblance to the Crosstour. Honda needs to stop photographing their new products with fish-eye lenses.

Was hoping for a pocket rocket like the CRX but with a 0-60 time of 9.7 seconds its going to be 2011 version of the Yugo.

That engine makes me sad, i'm fine with the whole hybrid thing as long as it has decent performance, that's horible performance though, definitly not matching it's looks to say the least.

I'm not sure about the 0-60 time. The 96 Civic EX reaches the 60mph in 8.5 seconds with the 127HP stock engine and it weights about 2482 pounds. I guess the CR-Z will weight a little less (despite a battery pack) and with a CVT that time could be in the high 7's.

This should have followed the idea for The NSX Concept that never became reality. Gas motor powering front wheels while dual electric motors power the rear wheels. That would give it great launch (0-60) and traction control but not as good regenerative breaking.

People are honestly going to buy this hybrid and then swap in a bigger motor? Why? E-bomb Honda and tell them to quit jerking you off and make a real sports car again.
One they are willing to refresh every few years instead of shunting it off to a dark corner like the S2000. Plus kids won't have to steal every friggin' Honda in the US just to get an engine.
A car that looks that good should be able to do a 0-60 time quicker than my daily beater 96 Sable. I hereby award the Snuggie of Shame to whatever propulsion engineer approved that driveline. Wear it in bad health.

Umm, they don't..well I guess if they want it "free" they do. Most everyone I know that has purchased a Honda motor has done it through JDM...
Everyone does realize the people buy used Elise/Exige's and spend 10K+ on a motor/tranny swap right? It's not like the stock Lotus/Toyota 2ZZ-GE doesn't make about 190hp... Of course Honda tuners being the a-holes they are always point as to how epicly awesome the K20 is...always glazing over the fact it's typically mated to a very tightly spaced six speed (yielding a very quick acceleration, and low top end)...
Hence the release of the Exige SC 240/260.

People who swap out the 2ZZ-GE for a K20A are retarded. They are just wasting their money to be gay Honda fan bois. And BTW the 2zz is also matted to a tightly spaced 6 speed...

And Honda Civics are the most stolen car in American, they are stolen for parts. That is why Trooper Bri made that comment.

What the hell is this? And I'm assuming it's front-wheel-drive too... and they're replacing the S2k with this... disgusting.

I saw the picture at first and said, oh yea!, coolness thereof! And as I read more, .... 14hp electric motor (do what?) for a total of 128hp. Two things crossed my mind.
I'm sure they EXPECT it to get 0-60 in 9.7. I expect my car to do it in 5 but that will never happen.
And,
the tuners will have a field day with this one. What an awesome platform to modify.
Go Honda.

A driveline swap on a Lotus is a whole different story, and class of vehicle. Drop all the paper you want. A relatively rare car with surprise under the shell. Tasty!
Unfortunately not every Honda "tuner" is a good driver or has the $$ to buy a new motor when they pop theirs. If I had a nickel for every tinted Civic I saw blowing blue smoke, I could buy my own Elise.
And motors arent the only thing these kids go through. Other driveline components, body parts (obvious by the dented and/or multi-colored body panel scheme on many). So, said "tuner" directly or indirectly obtains cheaper parts from stolen vehicles.
Police in these heavy, uh, "turnover" areas in fact are aware of this and some go out of their way to inspect tuners for stolen parts.
I'm not looking to make out every Honda owner as a thief or idiot. That's certainly not the case. Let's be honest though. Since Honda seems to be the most popular car of roughly the last 15 years, so of course it's going to get the most attention.
I still stand by my original statements though. Honda is giving you loyalists a cocktease here. Sweet car; wimpy, complicated drivetrain.
Some of you have been waiting ages for the next CR-X, and here it is! Don't forget to buy a new Acura too while you're at the dealership so you can turn it into what it should have been to begin with.
