Hyundai has officially unveiled its new direct-injected four-cylinder, which Hyundai claims delivers more power and a 10 percent improvement in fuel economy.
The 2.4L Theta II GDI four-cylinder took four years to develop and will debut in the 2011 Sonata. The engine officially puts out 198 horsepower and 184 lb-ft. of torque. The Theta II engine delivers 7-12 percent more torque across its rev range compared to a conventional engine. The engine is expected to see a 10 percent improvement in fuel economy, although final numbers have not been released. In addition to the direct-injection technology, the engine also gets variable valve timing on both camshafts.
When the 2011 Sonata debuts next year a V6 will not be offered.

I'm sure this won't be offered in the US! I was just in Peru and most of their vehicles are Diesel.

Makes the 210hp 2.0T in the Genesis coupe look a little lack-luster...more boost is in order!

All in all, this is a positve move for Hyundai. I have driven the current Sonata 4cyl/auto for work trips and I found it pretty capable. While the V6 is very nice, I suspect that there were not enough buyers to justify the hit to the CAFE ratings. Now, if they cab shoehorn this as their base engine in the Tucson (and Kia Sportage).

A torque curve would have been nice. I hope the extra ponies aren't primarily due to higher RPM. I hate it when the PR people say things like "conventional engine" in determine the 7-12 percent increase. Fudging comarisons seems to be the new trend, at a minimum say something like 90% of torque available at 1500rpm, where it's easily quantifiable and can be directly compared to an alternative.

@ rflynn88, the 2.0L T in the Genesis coupe is meant to be lackluster compared to the optional 3.8 V6 in the upper model ($$$$).

Simple retunes of the 2.0T are showing 260-290 ft/lbs of torque as well, so this is by no means a replacement for that. Now a 2.4T DI would be interesting, and make the 3.8 V6 pointless.
